Alabama TE Cameron Latu will ‘miss some time in camp’: Nick Saban

Alabama senior tight end Cameron Latu will “miss some time in camp,” head coach Nick Saban said during his season-opening news conference Thursday. Although Latu’s availability is uncertain at this time, a source close to the team told The Athletic that Latu is expected to return by early in the season.

Latu caught 26 passes for 410 yards last year and was tied for second on the team with eight receiving touchdowns. He’s the Crimson Tide’s returning leader in all three categories and is ranked third among seniors in Dane Brugler’s preseason tight end rankings for the 2023 NFL Draft. With Jahleel Billingsley’s transfer to Texas, Robbie Ouzts is the next tight end with experience behind Latu. The sophomore caught one pass for eight yards and played in 11 games as a freshman in 2021.

“That’s a position that we definitely need to develop some depth at,” Saban said, “and this will give us a good opportunity to do that.”

Alabama opens the season Sept. 3 against Utah State before a road game at Texas on Sept. 10. The Crimson Tide return home to host Louisiana Monroe and Vanderbilt to finish September.
