Colorado Avalanche star forward Nathan MacKinnon is in COVID-19 protocol and missed Tuesday’s practice, according to the team. His status for the Avs’ season opener on Wednesday, at home against the Blackhawks, is yet to be determined.
MacKinnon has been a Hart Trophy finalist three of the last four seasons and led the Avs to the Presidents’ Trophy last season. Colorado enters 2021-22 at the head of the pack of Stanley Cup favorites.
All but a handful of NHL players are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 so there’s still a chance MacKinnon could be out of protocol in time to play on Wednesday, depending on the circumstances that occurred on Tuesday.
