Brewers’ Willy Adames placed on IL with high ankle sprain

The Brewers on Wednesday placed shortstop Willy Adames on the 10-day injured list because of a left high ankle sprain. To fill the roster opening, Milwaukee recalled first baseman/second baseman Keston Hiura from Triple-A Nashville.

The injury occurred on a slide into home plate in the top of the first inning of the Brewers’ win Sunday in Miami. Adames remained in the game to play defense for the bottom half of the first before being replaced by Luis Urías in the second inning.

Adames was out of the lineup and unavailable off the bench for Monday’s series opener against the Braves. It was the first game he missed this season, crashing his goal of playing in every game this year. He now will miss more time.

In 148 plate appearances across 35 games, Adames is batting .208/.304/.462 with 24 RBIs for the division-leading Brewers. His nine home runs are the most of any shortstop in the majors this season.

The Brewers acquired Adames last May 21 in a four-player deal with the Rays. After joining Milwaukee, Adames was instrumental in leading the team to a division title. In 99 games and 413 plate appearances last season with the Brewers, Adames batted .285/.366/.521 with 20 home runs and 58 RBIs. He then was 5-for-17 in four playoff games.
