Depleted Fulham will take this blip on the chin – The Athletic

Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored 44 per cent of Fulham’s goals this season, so it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that they fired blanks without him.

“No Mitrovic, no goals” would be the assumed takeaway as rock-bottom Derby battled hard for a crucial point at Craven Cottage and after mustering 21 attempts on goal without making any count, that would feel like a fair reflection.

Yet it would not quite tell the full story of the evening’s excitement — not when you consider the sick bay at Motspur Park over these past few days.

Fulham kept an illness outbreak within the squad that had floored “six or seven” players, according to Marco Silva, under wraps. Some players had not trained properly since the win over Barnsley on Saturday and at 6.45pm on Wednesday night, it became clear that two, Mitrovic and Tom Cairney, would not be able to play either. Those also under the weather but soldiering on included Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Harrison Reed, Harry Wilson and Antonee Robinson, who were all name-checked by Silva.

“All had some problem in the last few days,” explained Silva. “Bobby was on the bench in case we needed him but he was not in the (right) condition. He had a fever and the others as well. Not COVID but it was an illness situation. Some made a big effort to play.
