Dwight Yorke on applying for the Aston Villa job for a third time: ‘I’ve had no response’

Dwight Yorke has revealed that he once again applied for the Aston Villa managerial vacancy — but did not even receive a response from the Premier League club.

Yorke began his professional career with Villa, making 287 appearances for the West Midlands club over eight years before leaving for Manchester United.

But the 50-year-old has no coaching experience since his retirement in 2009.

“I have to say at this point in time, although I have a fantastic relationship with Wes (Edens, Aston Villa co-owner), I still haven’t been able to get a response,” he said on Sky Sports.

“You still would like them to say, ‘It’s not possible, we have other options, maybe another time when the job becomes available again’.

“You just like to be acknowledged, but you’re not even getting that. I have to be realistic, and real to myself, understanding the challenge I face as an individual getting in.

“It’s not going to be as straightforward as some people have it — and that’s a fact. I have to look elsewhere and try to get some managerial experience somewhere else.”

This is the third time Yorke claims to have applied for the managerial role at Villa.

The former Trinidad and Tobago international, however, has never coached at any level after securing his Level B coaching badge in 2010.

Yorke offered his services in 2016, only to see Steve Bruce take over from Roberto Di Matteo, and again said he did not receive a response from the club he scored 97 goals for in the 1990s.

Then in 2018, following Bruce’s departure, Yorke stated he had applied for the job a second time.

“Villa, to me, seem like they need something new,” he said at the time. “I sent my CV in, but I’m not sure if it’ll be read or looked at.

“I’ve got a recommendation from Sir Alex. I’ve got his backing and he says that if I need his support then he’s on the end of the phone. He wouldn’t say that unless he believed I could do the job.”
