England’s historic victory over Germany in the Euro 2022 final on Sunday attracted a record peak audience of 17.5million on BBC One.
The thrilling 2-1 extra-time win is the most-watched programme in the UK so far in 2022.
The game’s peak audience means that almost 80 per cent of all people watching television in the United Kingdom at that time were tuned into the game, which England won 2-1.
The peak in viewing figures unsurprisingly came when Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal in extra-time, with 17.42million people giving the final a huge 78 per cent audience share.
Across the entire broadcast, the game was watched by an average of 11 million viewers, according to Barb data from overnights.tv.

The previous highest peak TV audience for women’s football in the UK saw 11.7 million tune in to watch England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by the United States in 2019.
Coverage of the Wembley final is the second most watched show in terms of average audience this year, only slightly behind the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which drew in an average of 13.07 viewers.
Last summer’s men’s European Championship final, which saw England lose on penalty kicks to Italy, was watched by a peak audience of more than 30 million.
The record broadcast in the UK remains the coverage of the 1966 World Cup Final — another game in which England beat Germany at Wembley — which attracted 32.3 million viewers.
The Euro 2022 final blew viewing figures for other sporting events on Sunday out of the water, with channel 4’s coverage of Max Verstappen’s Hungarian Grand Prix victory averaged 933k viewers between 6.30pm and 9pm.
Evening coverage of the Commonwealth Games, meanwhile, brought a further 3.25million viewers to BBC One between 8.30pm and 11.30pm.
In fact, the Euro 2022 final is the most watched event of the British sporting summer, with this summer’s Wimbledon men’s final between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios achieving a peak audience of 7.5 million.
The women’s final, which saw Elena Rybakina beat Ons Jabeur, managed a peak of 3.1 million on BBC One.
A record crowd of 87,192 watched the Euro 2022 final at Wembley Stadium.
