Fight breaks out at Patriots-Panthers joint practice for second straight day

Things reached a boiling point for a second straight day at the Patriots and Panthers’ joint practice on Wednesday. A second fight in as many days broke out between the two squads in Foxboro ahead of the team’s Week 2 preseason meeting on Friday.

Things started getting chippy after a play where the Patriots were returning kickoff. Panthers safety Kenny Robinson appeared to hit Patriots wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson, both of whom were kicked out of yesterday’s practice for fighting. Wilkerson was down for several minutes before being carted off and Robinson was kicked out. Patriots players then started pushing Robinson which caused a fight.

The teams ended special teams drills and moved to 11-on-11. On the first play of those drills, Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise appeared to hit Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey close to the sideline and the Panthers took exception. McCaffrey threw the ball at Wise then another fight started. Wise, along with Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard, was kicked out.

Robinson was also kicked out for a second straight day. With a Panthers staffer with him, he went out to the offensive field to try to get coach Matt Rhule’s attention, but GM Scott Fitterer told him to leave.

Wednesday’s scuffle follows a Tuesday joint practice that saw a large fight break out that involved multiple punches being thrown. Wilkerson and New England’s Kendrick Bourne and Robinson were kicked out initially. A few plays later, backup Patriots center James Ferentz knocked Carolina defensive tackle Phil Hoskins to the ground near the sideline, which started another fight and led to both of those players being ejected.
