Fulham close to loan deal for Brighton’s Shane Duffy

Fulham are close to signing Shane Duffy on loan from Brighton, The Athletic understands.

Fulham have been desperate to bolster their backline before the start of the new season and Duffy is expected to provide immediate competition for central defenders Tim Ream and Tosin Adarabioyo.

The Republic of Ireland international, 30, has 55 caps for his country and has made more than 300 career appearances, including 113 in the Premier League.

He signed for Brighton from Blackburn ahead of their promotion-winning Championship campaign in 2016-17, and then went on to help establish the Seagulls in the top flight under Chris Hughton.

Duffy made 18 league appearances during the 2021-22 campaign for Brighton, including 15 starts, but he has found opportunities limited behind Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk and Joel Veltman.

Brighton are also about to sign central defender Levi Colwill on loan from Chelsea, following Marc Cucurella’s expected permanent transfer in the opposite direction.

Duffy is set to become Fulham’s sixth signing of the summer and follows confirmation of goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s transfer from Arsenal earlier this week.

Marco Silva’s side have also signed Kevin Mbabu, Andreas Pereira and Joao Palhinha permanently, as well as Manor Solomon on a temporary one-year deal.

Duffy’s most recent loan spell was at Celtic during the 2020-21 season.
