Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz joins Middlesbrough on loan

Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz has joined Middlesbrough on a season-long loan.

The former Flamengo striker has been a key target for Chris Wilder’s team all summer, and the 21-year-old only made limited appearances for Fulham in pre-season.

Marco Silva’s side were only willing to let Muniz depart if they were able to sign another forward, which now appears likely. They are in advanced talks to sign Neal Maupay from Brighton, as well in discussions regarding a move for AS Roma winger Justin Kluivert.

The Athletic reported on Friday that Muniz was close to a loan move.

Middlesbrough rivalled Fulham for Muniz’s signature last summer. The centre-forward signed for Fulham from Flamengo for a fee thought to be worth up to around €8million, after a protracted transfer battle.

On Muniz’s arrival, Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder said: “He’s a player the club have history with and tried to sign him last year. He’s a real talented player and we’re delighted to have him here.”

Muniz is Middlesbrough’s ninth signing of the summer, and he will wear the No 9 shirt on Teesside.

He made 25 appearances in the Championship last season, but only two starts behind the prolific Aleksandar Mitrovic. Muniz still managed to chip in with five goals from 480 minutes of action.

Middlesbrough have started their Championship campaign with three draws and two defeats, having lost to Reading on Saturday.
