Iowa picked up the eighth commitment in its 2023 class with northwest Iowa defensive back Zach Lutmer pledging on Friday morning. It came just one day after he received a scholarship offer. The addition moves the Hawkeyes’ 2023 class to No. 15 in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Lutmer (6-1, 195) is a four-sport star at Central Lyon (Rock Rapids, Iowa) and earned first-team all-state honors in both football and basketball this year. As a quarterback, safety and punter for the Lions, Lutmer rushed for 1,246 yards and passed for 1,016 this year. He scored 22 touchdowns on the ground and passed for nine.
On defense, Lutmer finished with 46.5 tackles and intercepted four passes, one of which he returned for a touchdown. For the Class 2A state boys basketball runner-up, Lutmer averaged 19.7 points a game. This spring in track, he has posted impressive times in the 100-meter dash (11.05) and 200 (22.63). Last summer, he hit .360 in baseball.
Lutmer, who is a three-star prospect via 247Sports, joins fellow incoming safety Josh Nestor of Chicago as the second defensive back in the Hawkeyes’ next class.
