Iowa to have kids pick song to accompany Hawkeye Wave during football games

A two-month fan vote to establish one song permanently etched with “The Wave” instead turned into a request: Let the kids decide.

And they will. Iowa’s weekly kid captains will choose the song that plays as nearly 70,000 fans turn and wave to patients at the UI Children’s Hospital.

“The interest and passion for the Hawkeye Wave cannot be overstated, and the selflessness of the Hawkeye community proved once again why The Wave is the greatest tradition in college sports,” said Peter Matthes, University of Iowa vice president for external relations and senior advisor to the president. “The response for a new song was incredible, and one suggestion we continued to hear was, ‘Let the kids decide.’ So that is exactly what we will do.”

The Wave began in 2017 and quickly has become one of college football’s best traditions. Fans from around the country, on-field game officials and opponents join Iowa fans between the first and second quarters to participate in the heartfelt gesture at Kinnick Stadium. In April, the university announced an online public forum to help choose the music. Pat Green’s “Wave On,” formerly served as the featured song.
