Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate to undergo scan on knee injury

Ibrahima Konate will undergo a scan after limping out of Liverpool’s friendly defeat by Strasbourg at Anfield.

The French centre-back was substituted 12 minutes into the second half after twice needing treatment following a blow to the knee.

Konate headed straight down the tunnel with Sepp van den Berg replacing him but Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that further assessment will establish that the defender has only suffered a minor issue.

“We don’t know exactly yet on (Konate), but it doesn’t look too concerning so I hope we caught it in the right moment,” Klopp said.

A day after beating Manchester City 3-1 in the Community Shield, Klopp fielded a youthful line up, including eight teenagers, for the club’s final friendly against Strasbourg, who punished some sloppy errors to run out 3-0 winners.

Klopp had intended to start midfield duo Naby Keita and Curtis Jones, who only played minor roles off the bench against City, but both were ruled out of contention.

He adds: “Naby is ill and Curtis felt something a little bit and we couldn’t take any risks. All of a sudden the team was really young and we play a really strong Strasbourg side.

Asked whether Keita or Jones could be doubtful for next Saturday’s Premier League opener at Fulham, Klopp says: “Naby is ill, so no. Curtis, we have to see. There was no impact or whatever, so that always makes it a bit, ‘My god, what could it be?’

“We had no time. He felt it today and he wanted to play desperately, but then the medical department said no and that we needed to make further tests. We will do that tomorrow and then we will know more.”
