Matt Corral, Will Rogers highlight Egg Bowl – The Athletic

There’s always room for an extra serving of college football on Thanksgiving, and this year, Ole Miss-Mississippi State is on the table for the 118th playing of the Egg Bowl. This year’s edition will be on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Bulldogs opened as 1-point home favorites here, coming off a 55-10 win over Tennessee State. Will Rogers had another big day in that game, throwing for 391 yards and five touchdowns. Mississippi State has already beaten three ranked programs this year. If it can get to four, Mike Leach’s team will finish second in the SEC West. Maybe the Air Raid does work in this conference after all?

Last week, Ole Miss topped Vanderbilt 31-17 behind 326 passing yards and two touchdowns from Matt Corral in what he announced would be his final game in Oxford.

While the Rebels are also playing for second place in the division, there’s a bit more at stake here for Ole Miss. Its position in the polls set it up to potentially receive a New Year’s Six invite. But that doesn’t happen without a win in a rivalry that the Rebels have historically dominated. They won the 2020 game, ending a two-game skid. But three of the past four meetings have been decided by seven points or fewer.

Three of the last four Egg Bowls have been decided by one score. Underdogs have covered the spread in four of the last five and seven of the last nine. Last year Rogers passed 61 times for a career-high 440 yards, but the score was just 31-24. Picking a side in this rivalry seems like madness, but the under has appeal despite both teams being known for their pass-happy offenses. Mississippi State has gone over 61.5 just once in SEC play this year and Ole Miss has been under that total in its last six games. – Dan Santaromita, associate editor sports betting
