Colorado Avalanche star forward Nathan MacKinnon tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Wednesday’s season opener, according to Avs GM Joe Sakic. Sakic said he hoped MacKinnon, who is fully vaccinated, would be cleared in time for the Avalanche’s next game, on Saturday against the Blues in Denver.
MacKinnon has been a Hart Trophy finalist three of the last four seasons and led the Avs to the Presidents’ Trophy last season. Colorado enters 2021-22 as one of the Stanley Cup favorites.
The Avalanche initially said MacKinnon was in the COVID-19 protocol as a reason for missing Tuesday’s practice in Denver. Sakic revealed the positive test after practice and ruled MacKinnon out for Wednesday’s game against the Blackhawks.
