Newcastle United sign Nick Pope from Burnley

Newcastle United have signed Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope for an undisclosed fee.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that a deal had been agreed in principle and Pope travelled to Tyneside on Thursday to complete a medical.

The 30-year-old has joined Eddie Howe’s side on a four-year deal after leaving relegated Burnley.

Pope said of his move: “Now I’m here, I can’t wait to get started. The deal has taken a couple of weeks to come to fruition but it got over the line really quickly, and I’m delighted to be here and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into it.”

Howe added: “Nick is an exceptional Premier League and international level goalkeeper so I’m very pleased to be adding strong competition to a very important position.

“There has been a lot of interest in him from other clubs this summer, so I’d like to thank our owners and everyone behind the scenes for getting us ahead of the competition. I’m delighted he is joining us as we prepare for the exciting challenge ahead.”

He made 155 appearances during a six-year stint at Turf Moor and has so far earned eight caps for England, with a move to Newcastle likely to boost his prospects of making Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Pope is expected to provide genuine competition to Martin Dubravka, who was the undisputed No 1 last season but was sidelined with a foot injury in the opening months of the campaign.

Newcastle had been seeking to revamp their goalkeeping department and earlier this week allowed Freddie Woodman to join Championship side Preston North End.

Howe is out to build on an 11th-placed finish after a resurgent second half of the season staved off relegation fears.

The club have already secured the return of left-back Matt Targett on a permanent basis but while discussions continue for Hugo Ekitike, the 20-year-old Reims striker, and Sven Botman, the Lille centre-half, neither has yet progressed to the stage of being concluded.
