Orioles call up top prospect Adley Rutschman, will be starting catcher Saturday vs. Rays

Catcher Adley Rutschman, the top pick in the 2019 MLB draft and widely considered the best prospect in the game, will make his big-league debut for the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Saturday night, according to a source. The Orioles announced Saturday morning they had called up Rutschman.

The catcher, who was in Charlotte, N.C., with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides through Thursday night, is joining the team for a home series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 24-year-old switch-hitter likely would have been the Orioles’ Opening Day catcher this year, but he injured his right triceps in a minor-league intrasquad game right before major-league camp began in March.

He’s been playing at various levels in the minors since April 26, settling in at Triple A for the last 12 games. He’s hit .233 with an .819 OPS and three home runs for the Tides, including two homers in his last three games. Rutschman, the 2018 NCAA College World Series MVP with national champion Oregon State, has slashed .282/.391/.488 in 179 career minor league games.
