It would be silly to overreact to a single preseason game. We know that, but the overreactions can be part of the fun. Here’s a list of takeaways from the Celtics’ 103-102 loss to the Magic on Wednesday night.

Stock up: Payton Pritchard’s creation

The first five minutes of this game should never be mentioned again. They were wretched, a mess of sloppy mistakes and missed shots. Without most of their regulars, the Celtics looked rudderless. Jaylen Brown (COVID-19), Al Horford (COVID-19), Marcus Smart (rest), Dennis Schröder (rest) and Josh Richardson all sat out. Eventually, Pritchard took control.

He drained a 3-pointer to put the Celtics on the board 3:29 in, then splashed another one from the Magic logo two minutes later. On the next Boston possession, Pritchard drove baseline on defender Cole Anthony and found Romeo Langford cutting for a bucket. Pritchard continued guiding the Celtics offense for the rest of his initial stint on the floor. He checked out nine minutes into the first quarter with 10 points (on 4-for-6 shooting), two assists, two rebounds and a steal.

The Celtics know Pritchard can make 3-pointers. They are asking him to continue growing as a point guard and off-the-dribble threat.
