The Predators on Wednesday re-signed veteran defenseman Mattias Ekholm to a four-year, $25 million contract, sources confirmed to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun.

Ekholm, 31, was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, when his six-year, $22.5 million deal expires. Ekholm and his agent, Kurt Overhardt, were prepared to pause contract negotiations until the end of the season, which would have led to speculation about Ekholm’s future with the organization that drafted him in 2009.

Ekholm will earn $5.5 million in salary during the 2022-23 season and $6.5 million in each of the following three seasons. The contract does not include no-trade or no-movement clauses.

Over 10 NHL seasons, Ekholm has 219 points in 586 games. He is better known for his shutdown defensive ability.
