San Diego Wave FC to sign Swedish forward Sofia Jakobsson to 3-year contract: Sources

San Diego Wave FC have acquired the rights to forward Sofia Jakobsson via a transfer with Bayern Munich, according to multiple sources. The 31-year-old striker still needs to wait for her International Transfer Certificate and P1 visa before she’ll be able to join her new NWSL club, but it’s another dynamic option up top for the Wave in 2022 as part of their inaugural season.

Her contract with the Wave will be for three seasons, and allocation money will be used for her salary, according to sources.

While the transfer is with Bayern Munich, Jakobsson only joined that team in July — playing most of the season with Real Madrid. During the 2020-21 season, Jakobsson scored eight goals and added seven assists in 33 matches in Spain before the move to Germany.

Fans of the USWNT will know her from her long career with the Swedish national team, with appearances in the last three World Cups. Jakobsson provided the game-winning goal for Sweden in the third place match in 2019 against England, and tallied three assists during last summer’s Silver medal performance at the Olympics.

She’ll join a growing roster in San Diego that features plenty of big names already, including forward Alex Morgan and centerback Abby Dahlkemper of the USWNT and goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan of Canada — though one that is still in need of midfielders.
