Sue Bird returns to Seattle Storm for 19th season

Sue Bird is returning to the Seattle Storm for another season, the team announced Friday. Bird enters her 19th season in the league and holds the record for most seasons played in the WNBA.

The 41-year-old point guard has been a member of the Storm since becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2002 draft. The four-time WNBA champion became the first player in league history to reach 3,000 career assists last season during a game against the Phoenix Mercury.

Bird’s 18th season concluded with a second-round playoff loss to the Mercury, leaving many to wonder if the 12-time All-Star would call it a career. As Storm fans chanted “one more year,” Bird was noncommittal on her future in a postgame interview.

Her list of career accomplishments includes being the winningest player, female or male, in international history with five Olympic gold medals, four FIBA World Cup gold medals and one World Cup bronze medal. Bird was named to the WNBA 25th Anniversary Team as a top-25 player of all time.
