Two of MWC’s best meet Friday with a lot on the line – The Athletic

San Diego State and Boise State enter the regular season finale both with a chance to win division titles and make the Mountain West title game. SDSU controls its destiny while Boise State needs a win and an Air Force loss. These teams could even get a rematch in the title game if Fresno State loses on Thursday, Air Force loses on Friday and Boise State wins this game.

The Aztecs are actually small underdogs at home. This game kicks off at noon ET Friday on CBS, an early local time start.

For a division leader, San Diego State has developed a flair for the dramatic this year. Five of its six wins in league play have been decided by eight points or fewer, including last week’s 28-20 win at UNLV. The Aztecs led by 11 in the second half but needed a late touchdown pass from Lucas Johnson to pad the advantage before Seyddrick Lakalaka sealed the game with an interception inside of two minutes to play. Johnson finished with three scores in the win.

The Broncos are still in the hunt in the Mountain Division, though their path to the conference title game is a little murkier. First and foremost, Boise State needs to win. It has the momentum of a four-game winning streak and won those games by an average of 20.5 points. It also might have the right mismatch to play up. Hank Bachmeier is the anchor to a top-30 passing attack, and SDSU has been below average defending the pass. George Holani also does have three consecutive 100-yard games, but don’t count on that streak to continue as the Aztecs are college football’s No. 3 run defense.
